During a statement on Tuesday, August 25th, Dr Wheatley said Cabinet had approved the plan to re-open schools to in classroom teaching, however, since then they have had several positive COVID-19 cases with a total of 17 presently active and alarmingly, some of these cases are school-aged children.

Dr Wheatley said that equally concerning is the fact that these positive cases were socially active and frequented crowded, festive social gatherings.

The Education Minister said that in light of this extremely serious reality, he cannot in good conscience proceed with the plan to reopen schools to face to face instruction.  He said this will place administrators, teachers, support staff, and their children all at risk, and while admitting that he is aware of the fact that many are yearning for the return to the classroom, and he has received criticism from many who are advocating for opening the Territory up, they, however, must prioritize the health of their children and people above all other considerations
