OMICRON VARIANT PRESENT IN BVI AS ACTIVE CASES SURGE TO 1049

Health Minister Carvin Malone has confirmed the presence of the Omicron Variant in the territory.
Minister Malone during a live update on Friday night, said they have this confirmation based on the results of samples sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency, Carpha.
Minister Malone said that active cases have reached 1049, and some health care workers are also positive with the virus, also noting that the contact tracing team at the department of Public Health has been reduced to just two workers following COVID-19 infections there as well.
As it relates to mitigating measures, the Health Minister said they have now reduced crowd sizes to 100 people. He said they would not implement a curfew at this time, however Cabinet would meet again tomorrow and if this current spike is not brought under control they may have to implement other measures.
