NEW LAW YEAR OPENS

Written by on January 12, 2022

The 2022 New Law Year opened on Tuesday, January 11th with a consensus that digitally operated courts are here to stay.

The opening was done virtually because of the Covid-19 pandemic, under the theme “The ECSC: Re-Imagining the Justice System in the Era of COVID-19 and beyond”.

Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, ECSC, Virginislander Janice Pereira said the opening was scheduled to be held in the territory in person, however for another year the pandemic has forced them to meet virtually.

Justice Pereira was also particularly looking forward to being back home for today’s opening, which she said would be her last time doing so.

In her address she said that over the last year the court moved from simple managing Covid-19 to developing new and innovative ways of improving the justice system as a whole in light of deficiencies laid bare by the pandemic. According to Chief Justice Pereira it has forced them as a court to see and engage in the virtual world and redefining new views of courts and, no longer be seen as so much as a place but moreso as a service, adding that they were pushed in survival mode, requiring the court to transform its operations at an even faster pace.
