Police have slapped several additional charges on Jose Almestica, the prison escapee who was on the run since Hurricane Irma and recaptured a few weeks ago.
Police yesterday formally charged Almestica with 16 weapons charges including four counts of keeping a prohibited firearm.
Commissioner of Police Mark Collins shared this information at a press conference today as he laid out the accomplishments of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force during 2021. He said as a result of a successful operation conducted by the Major Incident Team early last month, some 20 firearms were confiscated. Of those 20, seven were high-powered prohibited weapons. In addition, close to 500 kilos of cocaine, 5.8 kilos of cannabis and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash were seized.
