Bougainvillea Clinic boasts of many firsts, and so on Tuesday November 16th it performed the first open heart surgery in the BVI and the Eastern Caribbean.
Bougainville Clinic hosted a press conference Wednesday morning where it said it was a massive team effort, led by Dr. Rodger Miller, a cardio-thoracic surgeon resident in the BVI together with Dr. Sunil Stephenson Senior cardiothoracic surgeon visiting from University Hospital in Jamaica.
The anesthetic team was led by Virgislander Dr. Craig Stoutt.
It said the patient underwent replacement of her aortic valve, the main one of four valves of the heart. After the initial setup, the operation took a total of five hours to complete. The patient was able to appropriately respond to commands shortly thereafter and continues to recover well in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Bougainvillea clinic. Owner at Bougainvillea Clinic Dr. Hesketh Vanterpool said the operation was a complex one but went very smoothly.
