As the government moves towards the legalising of Marijuana for medicinal purposes, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Dr. Natalio Wheatley said they are cognisant that the industry must be properly regulated and controlled.
Dr. Wheatley was at the time discussing the Cannabis Licensing Act 2020, on “Public Eye” on Facebook Tuesday evening.
The Cannabis Bill was introduced into the House of Assembly for its first reading by Premier and Minister of Finance, Andrew Fahie last Friday.
Many persons are concerned about the social issues which could derive from such a move. But Dr. Wheatley said he is under no illusion that this must be controlled and that they must have a responsible cannabis industry here.
According to Dr. Wheatley, they have learnt from the many countries which have legalized it already and that’s why they are putting together this Cannabis Licensing Authority that will issue guidance in terms of how this plant will be regulated.
Dr. Wheatley said that he has been given early indication from farmers that they want to participate in this industry.
Meanwhile the Cannabis Bill will be taken through the second and third readings when the House of Assembly meets on Friday, June 26th.
